The canyon of the river Aggitis, 15 km long, can be considered a paradise on earth. This deep and narrow valley between hard rocks offers the visitor a special beauty and an unprecedented experience.
The steep walls of the narrow valley are, according to one version of the story, an artificial construction by the Macedonians of Philip II in an attempt to drain the waters of the areas of Philippi and Drama.
The valley of the river Agitis was created in four evolutionary stages, during the Neogene and Quaternary, and is known by the names “Stena Petras” and “Dioryga”. According to a publication in the journal of the Natural History Museum of Vienna (February 1978), rock paintings representing camels, deer, horsemen holding horse reins and javelins, as well as abstract designs were found in three areas.
Based on the representations of horsemen, it is likely that the rock paintings were made in the 5th – 6th century AD.
A key feature of the Aggitis canyon are the deep cracks that start from the village of Symboli and end at the village of Lefkothea. The course of the river in the gorge is not in a straight line. That results in the water touching the rocks on many places, while there are water deposits on the other places.
The “caves” and arches created over time are of astonishing beauty.
The flora of the valley includes all kinds of wild species, while the fauna is also rich.
The construction of walking paths, i.e. the construction of a corridor that connects the Alistratis Cave to the canyon, planned by the council of Serres, makes this unique natural beauty more accessible to visitors.
