The Archaeological Museum of Polygyros is the most important museum of Halkidiki and is housed in “Heroes” square in the center of the city. The Museum houses archaeological findings, from all over Halkidiki, that present an important cultural history from prehistoric times.
The archaeological museum has some special exhibits, such as clay figurines and coins from Olynthos, vases from Toroni, pieces from the roof of the temple of Zeus at Kallithea, reliquaries, fishing equipment, lamps, jewelry, amphorae from Akanthos (today’s Ierissos) and funerary columns, as well as the statue of a woman from the 1st century AD, which comes from the sanctuary of a deified hero from Stratoni.
The exhibition of the Museum is developed in four themed sections, which are Location and History, Prehistoric Societies, Historical Times and Collections and Donations. Findings from the most important prehistoric settlements and cemeteries of Halkidiki, Saint Mamas, Olynthos, Toroni, Kriaritsi and Nea Skioni are exhibited, while selected exhibits from Roman times, funerary statues and columns, prepare the visitor about the completion of the section Historical Times. In the room where the Collections are exhibited, the remarkable Lambropoulos Collection occupies the dominant position.
