Το φρούριο Ρούπελ είναι ένα φρούριο στα βόρεια σύνορα της Κεντρικής Μακεδονίας χτισμένο το 1914. Έγινε μέρος των οχυρώσεων της Γραμμής Μεταξά τη δεκαετία του 1930 και έγινε διάσημο για την άμυνά του κατά τη γερμανική εισβολή στην Ελλάδα τον Απρίλιο του 1941.
Η οχύρωση του Ρούπελ δεν απέχει πολύ από την εθνική οδό Σερρών-Προμαχώνα, που οδηγεί στα ελληνοβουλγαρικά σύνορα. Βρίσκονται σε μικρή απόσταση από τα σύνορα στο στενό φαράγγι του Ρούπελ, από το οποίο ρέει ο ποταμός Στρυμόνας. Αυτό το μέρος είναι στρατηγικά σημαντικό για είσοδο σε ελληνικό ή βουλγαρικό έδαφος και οχυρώθηκε το 1914.
Κατά τη διάρκεια του Α’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, στις 25 Μαΐου 1916, η βασιλική ελληνική κυβέρνηση της Αθήνας επέτρεψε την παράδοση του φρουρίου στους Γερμανούς και τους Βούλγαρους συμμάχους τους ως αντίβαρο στις συμμαχικές δυνάμεις που είχαν εγκατασταθεί στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Τα γερμανοβουλγαρικά στρατεύματα προχώρησαν στη συνέχεια στην κατάληψη του μεγαλύτερου μέρους της ανατολικής Μακεδονίας χωρίς αντίσταση. Η πράξη αυτή οδήγησε στο ξέσπασμα της εξέγερσης των αξιωματικών του Βενιζελικού Στρατού στη Θεσσαλονίκη και στη σύσταση της Προσωρινής Κυβέρνησης Εθνικής Άμυνας υπό την αιγίδα της Αντάντ, αντίθετη στην επίσημη κυβέρνηση της Αθήνας και στον βασιλιά Κωνσταντίνο Α’, εδραιώνοντας το λεγόμενο «Εθνικό Σχίσμα».
Το φρούριο έγινε επίσης διάσημο κατά τη διάρκεια του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, όταν η προέλαση των γερμανικών στρατών σε αυτόν τον τομέα του μετώπου σταμάτησε εδώ. Την παραμονή του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου, το οχυρό Ρούπελ ενσωματώθηκε στη Γραμμή Μεταξά, μια νέα γραμμή άμυνας που κατασκευάστηκε για να αποκρούσει μια εισβολή στην Ελλάδα από τη Βουλγαρία. Για τρεις ημέρες, το οχυρό άντεξε ενάντια στη γερμανική επίθεση και εγκαταλείφθηκε από τους άνδρες του μόνο μετά την παράδοση του ελληνικού στρατού στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Σήμερα, μια από τις στοές της οχύρωσης είναι ανοιχτή για τους επισκέπτες, ως μικρό μουσείο. Στη στοά ο επισκέπτης έχει την ευκαιρία να νιώσει τις στιγμές της μάχης. Περπατώντας στους θαλάμους και στους πλαϊνούς διαδρόμους, μερικά διοράματα απεικονίζουν τα οχυρά μάχης των Ελλήνων μαχητών (πυροβολητής, γιατρός σε γιατρό που φροντίζει τραυματίες, ο λοχίας στο γραφείο του, το γραφείο του λοχαγού και άλλα).
