The Sarakatsani Folklore Museum is a museum dedicated to the history and traditions of the Sarakatsani, who originate from the northern Macedonia of Greece. The museum was founded in Serres in 1979. The current building dates back to 1997 and was built specifically to house it.
The Sarakatsani Folklore Museum in its current form is the result of many years of persistent efforts, during which it went through various phases and received various awards. It was originally inaugurated in 1979 on the first floor of an old mansion in Serres. Four years later, in 1983, the exhibition was extended to the second floor and the grand opening this time was combined with a scientific conference, the first organized on the theme “The Sarakatsani, a Greek Nomadic Pastoral Population”.
Since 1998, the museum has been running a two-hour educational program for elementary school children. The experts introduce the children to the Sarakatsani way of life, teaching them how to weave, how to spin and how to live in a Sarakatsani hut. The museum also has a collection of old photographs from all over Greece covering the period from 1906 to 1950, a collection of traditional songs, recorded and archived, and a room equipped with audiovisual systems.
