The Issari fortress was built by Vasilios the Bulgaroktonos. Standing 155 m high, iit dominates the northwest of the city. (“Demir Issar” means “Iron Castle” in Turkish). From the top of the castle, the visitor can observe the whole city and a large part of the plain of Serres, the river Strymonas and the lake of Kerkini. The visitor can also admire the sunset and the wonderful valley of the river Krusovitis.
