Visitors can enjoy the white-clad mountains, the green landscapes, the mysterious cave of Alistrati, the gorge of Aggitis, the wetland of Kerkini, the customs and traditions, the traditional products and so much more.
Geographically, the prefecture of Serres belongs to the region of Central Macedonia and is bordered by the prefectures of Drama and Kavala to the east and to the west by the prefectures of Thessaloniki and Kilkis. Going north, it neighbors Bulgaria and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (North Macedonia). The capital of the prefecture is the city of Serres. Modern and friendly at the same time, it’s an important shopping center and has a large market. It is the prefecture with the most villages in Greece. Its inhabitants are either native Greeks or refugees from Eastern Thrace, Asia Minor and PontusLooking from above, the prefecture of Serres is surrounded by mountains. The inland is the famous plain of Serres, a land with fertile soils and a multitude of cultivated products. The fields are watered by the Strymonas river. In its northwest, there is one of the most valuable wetlands and sites of ecotourism interest, Lake Kerkini. 41% of the total area of the prefecture is arable land, which also determines the main occupation of the inhabitants of the prefecture. Industrially, the prefecture relies on the production of milk, cheese products, distillery, cotton gins, wood processing, confectionery, animal feed, building materials and others. There are notable archaeological and historical sites in the prefecture. Some of them are the city of Serres, the area of Amphipolis, the holy monastery of Saint John the Baptist, the Virgin Mary Eikosifoinissa Holy Convent, Holy monastery of Agia Kiriaki and the forts of Metaxa line, that runs along the Greek-Bulgarian border in the Beles mountain range. Here is also the site of Klidi, where “Vasileios the killer of the Bulgarians” annihilated the Bulgarian army in 1014.
The prefecture has a rich cultural activity due to the many cultural associations existing in the area. The events known as “Anastenaria” in Agia Eleni, and “Gynaikokratia” in the communities of Monoklissia, Nea Petra and Ano Kamila are known throughout Greece. Also, festive events take place every Clean Monday in Mesorachi, where the “Kite Festival” takes place. Finally, the “Gerakina” festival takes place every spring in Nigrita. The song “Gerakina” has become known throughout Greece as one of the best folk songs, has its roots in Nigrita.
Also, many places in the prefecture are very popular with tourists. Many people visit these places every year to enjoy their beauty. Some of them are Agios Ioannis, a suburb of the Municipality of Serres, the valley of Agioi Anargyroi, Lailias mountainwith its rich forest vegetation and its modern ski resort, Kerkini lake where the visitor can see the artificial irrigation dam of the plain of Serres, the rich wetland that’s full of fresh fish, Ano Poroia, known for having a cooler climate in summer and supplies the areas around with fresh trout, Alistrati where the widely known cave and the Aggitis canyon are.
