The Archaeological Museum of Kavala is located in Kavala and belongs to the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kavala – Thassos. is considered one of the most important museums of its kind in Greece. It hosts representative finds from the broader area of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
It was established in 1934 and has been operating in its present state since 1964 in the building, built in 1963, it got relocated to next to the beach. The building had an extension in the late 2000s to create extra space for both permanent and temporary exhibitions. It is the central archaeological museum of Eastern Macedonia. The building used is the work of the architects Dimitris Fatourou and Georgios Triantafyllidis. It contains objects from the archaeological site of Amphipolis and relics from the ancient city of Neapolis, which later evolved into today’s Kavala.
The tour starts from the Neolithic period with finds from the “Dikili Tas” settlement. The largest part of the museum is occupied by the permanent exhibition titled “Neapolis – Christoupolis – Kavala”, on the theme of the timeless presence of the city through its monuments.
An important exhibit in the museum is the reference to the goddess Parthenos, the patron goddess of Neapolis, and her sanctuary, the only building of the ancient city that we know of. It is a magnificent Ionic temple, built at the beginning of the 5th century BC. century, with white marble from Thassos. In the museum you will see architectural members of the temple, specifically two of its columns at their actual height, which is impressive. In addition, there are sculptures, coins and a large collection of vases and figurines, which were usually offerings of the believers to the goddess, as well as a marble miniature temple, also dedicated to the sanctuary of Parthenos, which probably depicts the earliest temple of the goddess.
