The Holy Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner of Serres, also known as the Women’s Sanctuary and glebe of the Holy Monastery of Xenophon of Mount Athos, was built in 1270 and is a stunningly beautiful monument of Byzantine art. It is located approximately 12 kilometers northeast of the city of Serres andwas erected above the village of Akritochori, with an insuperable view of Lake Kerkini and the surrounding wetland. It was established as a women’s sanctuaryin 1981. Over 35 nuns are living there, and it receives many visitors, coming from the prefecture of Serres, as well as from other neighboring prefectures.
The central temple is stone built, decorated by many Byzantine frescoes. The iconostasis is carved in wood and dates back to 1804. It has a fascinating architecture surrounded by landscaped outdoor spaces with grass and trees.
