In Ano Brontou, potato cultivation began around 1920, after the First World War. Today, approximately 3,500 acres are cultivated with an annual production of over 10,000 tons.
The cultivated varieties are “Spuda”, “Agria” and “Lizeta” (Lizeta is cultivated in lower volume). The renowned taste of the Ano Vrontou potato is due to the special climatic and soil conditions of the region.
In the Prefecture of Serres, approximately 50,000 acres of rice are cultivated, which corresponds to 1/5 of the national cultivation and approximately 25,000 tons of rice produced annually. The rice produced Serres is considered as the most delicious because it grows in the fertile plain of the Strymonas river and not at its mouth.
They are produced from cereals grown in the fertile plain of Serres. Known for their excellent quality, flour, semolina and traditional pasta have captured the public eye in Greece and abroad. The flour and semolina mills of the Prefecture of Serres are among the leading companies in the field.
