The “Psychis Akos” ecclesiastical reliquary of the Holy Metropolis of Serres and Nigrita includes an important set of portable icons, silver vessels and gold-embroidered robes. These sacred relics come from churches and monasteries of the areas of Serres and Nigrita and date from the 14th to the beginning of the 20th century and are a sign of faith and artistic creation of our region. They represent a variety of themes related to the Divine service, as well as holiday themes. The oldest icons follow artistic trends appearing in Constantinople and Thessaloniki, while some of the newer ones suggest the existence of two workshops and the artistic movement they express, who can be traced back to the 17th and 18th centuries in the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner and in the area of Nigrita respectively.
The most important exhibits of the reliquary include the 14th century icon of Panagia Odegetria, two despotic icons of Christ Pantocrator and Panagia Brefokratoussa from the Holy Monastery of Saint John the Forerunner, two icons of Christ Pantocrator and Panagia Brefokratoussa from the 16th century from the old Metropolitan Church of Agioi Theodoroi and a shrine icon, the work of Dionysios of Fournas, which comes from the holy church of Agios Antonios at Serres.
