Spirulina is a blue-green microscopic algae that has been shown to be a source of high-quality protein concentration, minerals and fats, all essential to the human body. Its main advantage is that the vitamins and salts it contains are 100% plant-based and do not contain toxic residues. It can give more energy to the body, supports the immune system, improves work performance, improve sports performance and concentration. In addition, it helps with weight loss. It is also known as “astronaut food” due of its high protein levels.
Nowadays, it is cultivated by only three producers worldwide, two of which are located in Nigrita, Serres. It is grown in tanks and the cultivation process starts in late February and ends in early November. It has a higher initial investment cost and is high risk, especially in the early years. A critical factor for preservation and production is the temperature, which must be maintained at 32oC. The daily production reaches its maximum value during summer and counts 18-30 kg of pulp. The last step is to dry it and then turn the powder into tablets and capsules in the pharmaceutical industry.
