The Tobacco Museum of the Municipality of Kavala was founded in 2003, in order to pay tribute to all these people, who with their hard work, industriousness, unfailing will and ingenuity, created a social wealth.
262 tobacco warehouse complexes are registered in Kavala. Most of them were built along the coast, in order to facilitate the transport of tobacco from the warehouses to the ships. Tobacco warehouses are buildings “witnesses” of the inseparable relationship of tobacco with the city.
In the first decade of the 20th century, Kavala takes on the appearance of a large city. Magnificent buildings were erected, unions were founded, tobacco warehouses, schools, hospitals, libraries, cinemas and churches were built.
Since the 19th century, Kavala was the central pole of the international trade of the noblest of all tobacco varieties, cultivated around the world, which is basma. The factors that contributed were the climate, its geographical position and its port.
In the 20th century, mainly after the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey in 1923, the cultivation of tobacco formed the basis for the integration of the refugee population into the country’s economy and at the same time the center of social struggles. In Kavala the first trade unions were founded and the first Balkan strike was recorded, in 1879;
