Valaoritou Street is located in the center of Thessaloniki. It starts from Dodekanisou Street and ends at Ionos Dragoumi Street. It intersects with Sygrou Street.
Valaoritou Street is known for its nightclubs. It is essentially an old and historical area, full of old preserved and neoclassical buildings. The bars, beer halls and clubs that have settled there have changed its character in the past years, making it the most popular part of the city today.
In July 2014, the redevelopment of the surrounding area began. This project covers an area of 110 hectares and was inaugurated in April 2016. Essentially, this project introduced new traffic arrangements, widening and fencing the sidewalks, creation of a pedestrian network, in which only emergency vehicles and trucks will exceptionally be allowed to enter, management of the large amount of waste, with the installation of large semi-submersible waste bins, new unified urban lighting with a combination of mast lights and hanging lights in the narrow streets and the creation of a cultural route with sightseeing of the Preserved Monuments. Also, the bioclimatic interventions in the area include the replacement of the floor coverings with cold materials on the sidewalks, as well as the creation of fountains and water curtains. A big fan was placed in the Chrimatistiriou Square, in combination with a canopy and seating areas, while fans were also placed on buildings around Valaoritou Street. The purpose is the bioclimatic upgrade of the area is to reduce the average street temperature by up to 5 degrees Celsius.
